Sunday, the Livonia Kennel Club show, 8/31/03:

We again had a great day. Liam took Winner's Dog, Best of Winners and Best of Breed over 9 dogs thus finishing his championship with 4 majors and 16 points. Alana took Winner's Bitch and Best of Opposite Sex (to Best in Breed).

However, the best part of the whole day was the Best of Breed competition.

Champion Liam, having won Winner's Dog, needed to be in the ring against Alana, Winner's Bitch. I am reasonably competent as a handler now, but showing two dogs against each other was a bit much for me. I recruited one of the other exhibitors, Denise, to show Liam, hoping that Alana would take best of Breed and thus get her second major by beating Liam..

Liam is a one-person dog and he did not want to be shown by someone else, handled by someone else, or to lose sight of me. He was ahead in the line up and spent the entire time trying to turn around to look at me. He circled, he sat, he twisted almost upside down, he tap-danced, he did everything but stand still for the judge to look at him. Poor Denise, who is a good handler, just could not get him to stand for the judge.

The judge, enjoying a good laugh, asked us to circle the ring and Liam was willing to do that, running sideways so he could keep his eye on me running with Alana behind him. At this point everyone is laughing. I am trying to get Alana to stand for examination but am laughing so hard I can't quite do it right and Liam is having none of it ! ! !

Giving up on trying to do it right, the judge runs a cursory hand over Liam and pronounces him Best of Breed, and also winner of the Arthur Murray prize for best freestyle dancing with a partner.
